Legacy Systems & Integration Consulting
Modernize the Systems You Already Have
Your old software does not have to be replaced to work with modern technology. I help businesses connect, stabilize, and modernize legacy systems, EDI workflows, databases, custom applications, and older business platforms without forcing a costly rip-and-replace project.
Talk to HerbAfter seven years as CTO of a software company, I understand both sides of the technology stack: modern APIs, AWS, Docker, automation, and AI-assisted development, as well as older systems, EDI, flat files, batch processes, legacy databases, and platforms such as IBM i / AS/400.
Problems I solve
- An old ERP or business application needs to communicate with a modern SaaS platform.
- EDI files fail, arrive twice, or disappear between systems.
- Data imports sometimes process twice, and nobody can confirm every transaction reached the receiving system.
- CSV, flat-file, FTP, or SFTP exports need to reach a modern API.
- A critical integration was written years ago and nobody understands it anymore.
- You want to modernize without replacing the core system that runs the business.
- A database migration or modernization project has stalled.
- Vendors blame each other when an integration fails.
- Developers do not want to work with an older platform.
- You need someone senior enough to understand the architecture and hands-on enough to fix it.
- Cloud services and legacy applications need to coexist reliably.
Reliable integrations do more than move files
A successful transfer does not prove that the right records were imported once, completely, and correctly. Older systems will often happily import the same transaction twice. The integration needs its own transaction tracking, validation, and reconciliation rather than assuming the receiving system will protect the data.
- Check what leaves. Record counts, field validation, and checksums or hashes where appropriate detect incomplete or changed files before they become business records.
- Know what was already processed. Stable transaction IDs, duplicate detection, and idempotency—making a repeated request safe—help prevent a retry from creating another order or invoice.
- Confirm what arrived. Acknowledgements and reconciliation compare expected transactions with accepted records. Missing or rejected data stays visible.
- Make failures recoverable. Import logging, audit trails, failure queues, controlled retries, monitoring, and alerts let someone investigate and replay safely.
Legacy Systems Assessment
Fixed-price starting engagement: starting at $1,500. We agree on the systems, deliverables, and fixed fee before work begins. Start with one bounded assessment; you do not need to commit to a large modernization project.
- Current-system review and application/integration inventory
- Data-flow mapping and an architecture diagram
- Risk identification, including duplicate imports and data loss
- Security and operational review
- Modernization opportunities and prioritized recommendations
- Written implementation roadmap
Integration Rescue
Projects typically start around $2,500. Focused diagnosis and repair for broken APIs, EDI problems, CSV/SFTP workflows, database synchronization, duplicate transactions, missing data, vendor connections, migration troubleshooting, and undocumented integrations.
Discuss an Integration ProblemFractional Technical Leadership
For companies that need senior technical leadership but do not need another full-time executive. Hands-on fractional CTO work includes architecture, vendor oversight, developer management, project recovery, AWS/cloud architecture, deployment, infrastructure, security/compliance coordination, technical roadmaps, and technology cost reviews.
Engagements starting around $2,500/month. Scope and working arrangements are agreed for each engagement.
Discuss Fractional LeadershipWhite-Label Technical Operations for Agencies
You keep the client relationship. I handle the technical work your developers should not have to stop and deal with. I can work behind your agency’s brand, with clear responsibilities and communication through your team.
- WordPress maintenance, plugin/theme troubleshooting, and site rescue
- Hosting, DNS, SSL, server issues, migrations, and backups
- Security maintenance and technical escalation
- Deployment workflows, AWS/cloud work, integrations, and legacy client systems
For businesses with complicated operational systems
My background includes furniture industry software and operational systems. I am especially interested in organizations where orders, inventory, payments, and day-to-day work depend on several systems staying in step.
- Furniture and retail; distribution and wholesale
- Manufacturing, logistics, and warehousing
- Equipment dealers and construction suppliers
- Business software vendors and agencies
- Professional services
- Companies with older ERP or line-of-business systems
The starting point is understanding your workflow and constraints, rather than assuming every industry works the same way.
Keep what works. Make the connections dependable.
My eyes don’t glaze over when someone says AS/400. I understand why a business may keep an older platform—and why it still needs to exchange reliable data with newer tools.
